Hi, guys —

  • Is it possible to pray and ask Jesus to bring someone back to life who has died?

I'm a 12-year-old girl who is curious. My mother always says anything is possible with God.

I was just wondering if by:

  • going to Adoration
  • praying my Rosary, and
  • saying my Divine Chaplet of Mercy for someone

they could come back to earth. I miss them dearly. By the way, no one knows if the person I am praying for is dead or not. We just assume he has died.

Mike replied:

Dear Amy,

Thanks for the question.

I can't think of any cases, where a dead person has been brought back to life after they have been buried but I want you to look at the positive side of this person you miss dearly.

  1. You now have a prayer partner you can:
    • pray for, and
    • ask for their prayers in your life's struggles
  2. If you keep going to Church, receiving the sacraments, going to Adoration, praying the Rosary, and saying the Divine Mercy chaplet for your friend, you will likely meet them again in the future.

    Look forward to it!

Many people mistakenly think people who die are literally dead. This is wrong. They are only dead in the earthly sense of the word "dead". In Christ, they are very alive and help us through their prayers. Though they have passed from this life, they are still a live with the Lord. The prayer power of a saint in Heaven is much stronger than the prayer of a person on earth.

Both my parents passed away a few years ago, but I still talk to them all the time. I put them in charge "prayer-wise" with whatever I remembered them to be good at.

  • If I'm shopping for clothes, I ask my mother to team with the Blessed Mother to help me find what I need.
  • If I need to discern proper finances, I ask dad to team with St. Joseph to help me to do the right thing. Of course, Our Lord is in on all of this.

I hope this answers your question.

Mike

Eric replied:

Dear Amy,

There are documented cases of Saints raising people from the dead. It's in the Bible too:

  • someone dropped a dead man into Elisha's grave and he came back to life (2 Kings 13:21)
  • Peter raised a man who fell asleep during his sermon and fell out a window (Acts 20:9)

It's exceedingly rare but it would not be a sin to ask. Just adjust your expectations.

Eric
