Kaylie,
You are right that Catholics do not worship Mary or the Saints: they are simply family with good prayers and they love and care deeply for us.
Just consider this, Jesus is our model in every facet of life. We follow His example in everything.
- If the heroes and role models of our faith were never to have any connection with us until we join them in Heaven, why did Jesus meet with Moses and Elijah on Mount Tabor?
- Wasn't that considered taboo?
- How does His Life model ours in this respect?
Many scholars, of varied denominations, suggest that Jesus would have been receiving encouragement and solace from Moses and Elijah to strengthen him for what lay ahead.
- If those two weren't even in Heaven yet, how much more could those that stand in The Light of God's Face do for us?
It's worth reflecting on. James said,
"The prayers of a righteous man of availeth much."
James 5:16
Catholics believe that the saints in Heaven are cheering us on, praying for us as Hebrews describes:
"Therefore having so great a cloud of witnesses over our head, laying aside every weight and sin which surrounds us, let us run by patience to the fight proposed to us."
Hebrews 12:1
Be sure and read Revelation as well, particularly chapter 6 to see more imagery of the saints in Heaven demonstrating awareness and concern for our plight.
Peace,
Bob Kirby
