Hi, guys —

I have been going through a very rough time with scrupulosity and blasphemous thoughts and have been feeling very far away from Jesus. I continue to pray but I feel so weak and dirty.

  • What should I do?

Dear Alissa,

Sorry, it took so long to get back to you.

After reading your e-mail and question, I came away with one conclusion: You are human : )

Scrupulosity is something many can come across as we grow in our prayer life. This is where a good spiritual (confessor/priest) can be handy and give you good advice and counsel, especially when going to Confession.

Blasphemous thoughts are the work of the devil and his legions. What is needed is a persevering prayer life, yes, even when you feel very far away from Jesus. He knows the struggles you are going through and is right there with you, helping to get you through.

Due to the remnants of original sin, meaning concupiscence, we will always struggle with temptation throughout our Earthly life.

When you fall, like I do, so many times, just get back up and, if it is a serious sin, go to Confession first, before receiving Communion at Sunday Mass and if you are not properly disposed to receive the Blessed Sacrament on any given Sunday, say a Spiritual Communion.

Spiritual Communion

O Lord Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Altar.

I love you above all things, (with all my mind, with all my heart, and with all my soul).
I love you because you are infinitely good and worthy of all my love.

Since I cannot receive You now sacramentally, at least come spiritually into my heart.
I embrace myself entirely to You and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.

Come Lord Jesus and glorify Yourself through my weak, broken body.

Amen.

Any questions, go by the counsel of your confessor in Confession.

The solution to both problems is perseverance in prayer, especially going to the sacraments on a regular basis:

  • Sunday Mass and if possible going to daily Mass, as well as
  • going to Confession on a regular basis.

The Sacraments, along with praying the Rosary and reading the Scriptures, are the dynamite of our faith.

Don't give up but persevere; don't give satan more credit than he deserves. This is why I never capitalize the word satan on my website. That piece of garbage, to put it nicely, doesn't deserve to be capitalized.

I hope this helps,

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Holy (2021) New Year.

Mike

Alissa replied:

Mike,

Thank you so much for your help and I hope you have a happy New Year!
