Hi, guys —

I have been following the discussion relative to Pope Francis' disgusting attempt to restrict the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM), and I keep seeing the SSPX mentioned.

I discovered that this stands for the Society of Saint Pius X. After reviewing their web site I am somewhat confused. They seem to be in full communion with the Church, but there are multiple mentions of problems in that regard.

  • What exactly is the relationship between the SSPX and Rome?
  • If I decide to go to a Latin Mass at a SSPX church, are there any issues to be aware of?

Thanks in advance for your insight.

Albert

Eric replied:

Albert,

The SSPX used to be in full schism from the Church; they were excommunicated when they consecrated four bishops against the explicit mandate of Pope St. John Paul II.

There has been some reconciliation; they are merely irregular now, but they still question certain parts of the Second Vatican Council.

They should be avoided. Find an FSSP or Institute of Christ the King parish if you are drawn to the Vetus Ordo (TLM) liturgy.

Albert replied:

Eric,

Thank you for the clarification.

I do strongly believe the TLM should always be revered and available and appreciate the SSPX's apparent steadfast resolve in that area, but I can't go along with any Catholic organization consecrating their own bishops therefore, I will avoid SSPX for the time being.

I appreciate your rapid reply.

Albert
