Hi, guys —

I just started a job that requires me to work alternate weekends 10:30 am - 6:30 pm. I can't make Mass because of my hours.

  • Can I still receive Holy Communion even though I can't attend Mass because of my work hours?

Thanks,

God Bless,

Phil

Bob replied:

Dear Phil,

If there is no way to be physically present at Mass due to work requirements, then try to attend a virtual Mass around the work hours (i.e. 7:30 am Sunday Morning), even if it is recorded, most parishes are providing them for those unable to come because of the Coronavirus, and even if your parish doesn't have one, EWTN and other places will provide one.

  • I am curious how you could have access to receiving Communion without attending Mass?

If you are in the state of grace that should be fine.

Perhaps you are asking if missing the odd weeks removes you from the state of grace thus making you ineligible to receive on the other weeks. That should not be the case unless you are deliberately shirking your Sunday obligation. Work exemptions are fine unless they violate the sabbath rule of unnecessary work, in other words, just to make more money.

It is not uncommon for health professionals, fire and police officers to have these conflicts, so you just have to adjust to the circumstances and make your sabbath rest and worship a bit more adaptive. God knows whether you are sincere or faking it, so be honest with Him and He'll bless you accordingly.

Peace,

Bob Kirby

Hi  Phil,

I just wanted to add a bit to Bob's answer.

You said:

To my knowledge distribution of the Eucharist outside of Mass, is only done in extreme circumstances.

This is where I wish we had a pastor or priest to help us who is knowledgeable in Canon law.

Mike
