Pondering Paul wrote:

Hi, guys —

I am a part of the band at my church.

The deacon asks us all to receive Communion:

  • even if we have already received Communion that day or
  • are not in a state of grace

so that the band will look better.

Would it be a sin for me to receive Communion if he asks me to (while I am not in a state of grace)?

Thanks for anything you can give me; this has been bothering me.

Paul

  { To please my Deacon, would it be a sin to receive Communion while not in a state of grace? }

Bob replied:

Dear Paul,

Thanks for the question.

I think you already know the answer to this.

Your Deacon is more concerned with appearances than holiness; Jesus had a word for that.

You should refrain from Communion if you are not in the state of grace, lest you commit sacrilege.  Your Deacon will also incur the guilt for anyone who follows his advice while in this state.  Listen to your conscience, you did the right thing in writing to us.

Whenever you have a doubt about something, do your own homework or reach out for help, but whatever you do, find what the Church authentically teaches.

Peace,

Bob Kirby
