Hi, guys —

I am a devout Catholic and I recently got questioned by one of my Protestant friends about the Inquisition.

This is what she said:

"The Church went through hundreds of years of spiritual darkness in the early 1000s, when people were killed for having Bibles and people were oppressed because they truly sought the Word of God. This was the Inquisition."
  • Can you explain what the Catholic Church did so wrong so I can clarify the issue to her?

Thank you, and God bless you!

Benjamin

Mary Ann replied:

Hi Ben,

It is impossible to answer a question based on mistaken history.

Most Protestant protests are based on false understandings of Church doctrine, and false facts of history. Combine the two and you get a mess which can't be addressed from within its own premises. None of what she said bears any resemblance to history. However, there are answers to things like:

  • The Inquisition (which wasn't what the England-generated Black Legend says it was),
  • the millennial heresies,
  • the use of Bibles, etc.

Since the answers require context, I would suggest that you go to:

which is the older version of the Catholic encyclopedia, and is very historically-oriented, and look up Cathars, Albigensians, and the Inquisition.

That will get you started; cross links will take you further.

Hope this helps.
