Mike Bauer wrote:

Hi, guys —

I watched a disturbing video showing Pope John Paul II kissing a Qur'an.

  • Is this for real?
  • If he did do this, why?
  • Didn't he condemn these false religions?

It showed him participating in Buddhist ceremonies, and telling these religions there is nothing wrong with their religions; he said that they are great religions.

  • Is this true?

Thanks and God bless!

  { Why did Pope John Paul II kiss the Qur'an and participate in Buddhist ceremonies? }

John replied:

Hi Mike,

Let's decipher the truth from the myth.

John Paul has never said there's nothing wrong with Islam or Buddhism. What he has done, in accordance with Catholic Teaching, is to praise what is good in another religion, but to also always admonish the members of that religion to continue to seek the truth.

He might have attended Buddhist services, or even prayed with a Buddhist, but never did he participate in the sense of giving sanction to a pagan practice.

As for kissing the Qur'an, 60% of what Mohammed wrote comes from Scripture. While the Qur'an is heretical, it does contain some truth.

Unfortunately, kissing it does send mixed signals, because the heresy it contains can be fatal to souls. Nevertheless, John Paul II was clearly seeking to reach out to, rather than endorse, Islam.

John
