Mike,

  • How does the Catholic Church back up saying that we are saved by faith and works, based on what was said in Romans Chapter 4?

I don't think that we can receive an altar call, walk out the Church doors never to live for God, and then be automatically ensured to enter Heaven. Now that might be possible since God is all loving and all merciful, however, I'm not willing to chance it.

I'm going to believe that I am saved by faith, and work as hard as I can to serve God and thank Him for that Gift. I know that it says somewhere in the Bible that, Faith without works is dead, but I still was wondering how the Catholic Church would respond to Romans 4.

Thanks for your help as always.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the question.

Scott Hahn gave an excellent explanation of the Abraham being justified issue on on an audio CD from St. Joseph Communication. James Akin uses the same arguments here:

I'm a big fan of dialogue explanations. I believe you can learn a lot thought them. That's why when I post answers to questions we also post any rebuttals as well.

I want visitors to AskACatholic.com to see that we are open to constructive dialogue.
Catholic Answers also has some great pre-made dialogue answers.

I think you will find them informative and helpful. I highly recommend you bookmark these.

These postings from our site should help as well.

I don't claim to be a know-it-all, but I feel I've been around Catholic-Protestant Faith-sharing circles long enough to tell you which people are sincere and will give you good Catholic Answers that are also loyal to the Holy Father and the Church's Magisterium.

They include:

Catholic Answers: Catholic Answers
Scott Hahn: St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology
Patrick Madrid: Patrick Madrid and Envoy Magazine
James Akin: The Nazareth Resource Library
Tim Staples: Tim Staples, Director of Apologetics and Speaker
Steve Ray: Defenders of the Catholic Faith

Hope this helps,

Mike
