Hello,

My name is Tony. I am an American male living in Germany. I'm part of the U.S. Military.

I was baptized a Mormon, converted to Catholicism, was re-baptized, and confirmed in 1992.
I am 33-years-old, married, with no kids.

My wife had a heart transplant 14 years ago. She is taking a lot of medication for it and for the major side effects of the heavy medications. She is also taking the pregnancy pill. We were talking about me getting a vasectomy.

  • How does the Church feel about vasectomies?

Thank you for your time,

Tony

John replied:

Hi Tony,

The Church teaches that all forms of artificial contraception are a gravely disordered act. Therefore, the Church does not permit artificial means of contraception.

That includes:

  • the pill
  • condoms
  • vasectomies, or
  • other surgeries whose sole intent is to prevent conception.

There are occasions when the pill is given to women to regulate other medical conditions. This is permissible, but is not a loophole. In these instances, the woman must truly need this medication for reasons other than birth control.

The Church, however, does permit Natural Family Planning methods (NFP), which have proven very successful, in order for a couple to space their children.

That said, the Church admonishes couples using (NFP) not to develop a contraceptive mentality and to remain open to the possibility of new life.

I would like to thank-you for your service to our country. It is greatly appreciated.

Hope this helps,

John
