Anne Van Tilburg wrote:

Hi, guys —

  • When a priest leaves the Church, can he be legally married?

Thank you!

Anne

  { When a priest leaves the Catholic Church can he be legally married? }

Eric replied:

Hi, Anne —

Yes, duly laicized priests can be married in the Church.

Eric

John replied:

Hi Ann,

The question seems odd.

  • Why would he want to marry in the Catholic Church once he legally left the Church? or . . .
  • Do you mean:
    • Can he be legally married after he's legally left the priesthood?

John

Richard replied:

Anne —

When a priest is lawfully dismissed from the clergy, he is usually released from the obligation of celibacy, so he's free to marry.

Mary Ann replied:

The question is unclear.

If a priest is laicized, he is free to marry in the Church.

If he leaves the Church, he wouldn't want to marry in the Church, presumably, but if he met a Catholic woman who wanted to marry him, I presume it would be treated as any mixed marriage.

Mary Ann
