Hi, guys —

Our Cub Scout pack wants to present our pastor with a stole which he can wear for Scout Masses.
I have been unable to find any guidelines on what decorations are appropriate for such a stole.

One of the mothers plans to make the stole herself and attach some scouting symbols. I was asked to find out if there are any requirements or prohibitions she should know about.

Thanks.

Lisa

Mary Ann replied:

Hi, Lisa —

What a wonderful idea to make a stole for the priest!

  • Did you know there was a priest assigned by the Vatican to be the Church's representative to World Scouting?

The founder of Scouting, Baden Powell, said that scouts must know two books:

  • the book of nature and
  • the Bible.

So both natural and Scriptural symbols would be appropriate for a stole. The fleur de lis symbol of scouting is also a symbol of the Blessed Mother, so why not use that.

As for other symbols, make sure they are the sort that can be shown at any Mass.
