Hi, guys —

  • I just want to ask if it is sacrilegious to wear a Rosary around your wrist?
  • Is there a rule in the Catholic Church about this?

Hi, Aryhl —

You said:

  • Is it sacrilegious to wear a Rosary around your wrist?

I'm assuming it's a blessed Rosary. As long as it is treated in the same manner and respect that any other holy item or relic would be treated, it's fine.

If there is a chance it would be treated in a less-then-appropriate manner, I wouldn't recommend it.  Even if it's an unblessed rosary, there is still a public perception one has to take into account.

If done correctly, you want to transmit the message:

That the Holy Rosary you are wearing is an outward sign that you are "set apart(this is what holy means) for God.

  • Make sense?

You said:

No. There is no rule in the Church on this issue at all. This would fall into the category of a tradition, small t or custom.

If the Rosary is worn devoutly and respectfully, there is nothing wrong with wearing it around one's wrist. If it intended merely as jewelry, a la Madonna (the singer, not the real Madonna), or as a fashion statement, that would not be respectful.

If you do wear it though, be aware that you may offend some people who assume you are treating it as a fashion statement.
