Frank Drake wrote:

Hi, guys —

I heard a few things about praying; that if you develop a deep prayer life and meditate, you can grow in to a deeper prayer life.

  • Is there is a name for this?
  • Where can I learn more about it.

  { Is there a name for a deeper type of prayer and where can I learn more about it? }

Mike replied:

Hi, Frank —

Thanks for the question,

I believe you are referring to contemplative prayer.

From the Catholic Dictionary:

Contemplative Life: A Term meaning the way of life that seeks God by prayers and mortification.

Traditionally, two dimensions of the Christian vocation are delineated by the Church and the spiritual writers:

  • the active life (e.g., performing the corporal works of mercy) and
  • the contemplative (e.g., praying and sacrificing for oneself and for the world).

The vowed religious life — a kind of contemplative life — offers a higher degree of perfection than the active life.

You can probably find some good books on contemplative prayer, but stay away from the new age stuff like:

  • Reiki
  • Centering prayer and
  • the Enneagram

Some yoga also can have some anti-Christian mantras.

Here is a book search based on the key word: contemplative

Hope this helps,

Mike
