Hi, Frank —
Thanks for the question,
I believe you are referring to contemplative
prayer.
From the Catholic Dictionary:
Contemplative Life: A Term meaning
the way of life that seeks God
by prayers and mortification.
Traditionally, two dimensions
of the Christian vocation are
delineated by the Church and the
spiritual writers:
- the active life
(e.g., performing the corporal
works of mercy) and
- the contemplative (e.g.,
praying and sacrificing for
oneself and for the world).
The vowed religious
life — a kind of contemplative
life — offers a higher degree
of perfection than the active
life.

You can probably find some good
books on contemplative prayer, but
stay away from the new age stuff
like:
- Reiki
- Centering prayer and
- the Enneagram
Some yoga also can have some
anti-Christian mantras.
Here is a book search based on the
key word: contemplative
Hope this helps,
Mike
