Betty Sturm wrote:

Hi, guys —

My friend and I were talking about our grand kids and their parents. It seems our children do not practice the Catholic faith and she said that she baptized her grandchild. I said she shouldn't do that because then she is responsible for bringing the child up in a Catholic way.

She said, No, she just wanted to get rid of original sin.

  • Should she have done this?

Thank You,

Betty

  { If the grandchildren of a family doesn't practice the faith can a Grandmother baptize them? }

Mary Ann replied:

Dear Betty —

Be glad that the child is baptized! and pray that the grace in the child will also work in the parents.

What the grandmother did was illicit (contrary to the rules) but not invalid.

She most certainly did wrong, not just by breaking the rules, but by violating the parental rights. They alone have the right to give consent to Baptism in the name of the child.

Mary Ann
