Hi, guys —

I have received all my sacraments: First Communion and Confirmation. My fiancé has not; and we want to get married in the Church.

  • What can we do?

I have started going to some RCIA classes with him but we thought it was going to be for a short period of time and instead it's for a couple of months.

  • Are there any other alternatives?
  • Maybe an exception?

Thanks,

Yesenia

Mike replied:

Hi, Yesenia —

Thanks for the question.

Your pastor would know what is best in your particular situation. Although there can be exceptions for a shorten period of RCIA or sacramental instruction, it's not always best for your fiancé or you.

This nine-month period is also a time of discernment for you and your fiancé to discover where you both feel called to serve in the Church. It's also a great time to make new friends at the parish. Who knows, there maybe another person in the parish in a similar situation.

We have to step back and remember, receiving the sacraments in a manner that is efficacious for him is not like driving your car in for:

  • a car wash, or
  • oil change.

Having a cognitive understanding of the dynamite within the sacraments is key. All sacraments are encounters with Christ, Our Blessed Lord.

A real problem can occur when sacramental instruction is rushed.

It can end up reflecting the poor catechesis present at many Catholic parishes in the United States today.

  • If one doesn't know their faith, how can how be expected to practice their faith?

I would encourage both of you to consider buying a cheap copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church to learn everything we believe as Catholics.

And finally, tell your fiancé I said, Welcome to the family!

Hope this helps,

Mike
