Hi, guys —

I am going to be the godfather at my niece's Baptism next month. It will be a private Baptism and not done during Mass. I've been told that it is my obligation to give the priest a stipend.

  • Is this true?
  • If so, what is the customary amount to give?

We live in the New York/New Jersey area and have no idea what is customary.

Thank you,

Len

Hi, Len —

Thanks for your question.

I would suggest you call the parish office and ask the business manager. I don't think it's a universal custom. It is certainly not practiced in the parish I attend. The priest already receives a salary, albeit modest.

It is more likely the custom to give a $10.00 tip to the altar servers, if there are any present to assist.

This is more of a custom at weddings, but it has been known to happen at private Baptisms.

John
