Hi, guys —

I was a practicing Catholic all my life (I am 43 years old). One year ago I eloped and married a non-Catholic (she is a Lutheran) and she is not planning on converting to Catholicism. Over the past year, I still go to Mass but don't participate in the Mass as far as Communion, Confession, etc.

I'm seriously considering leaving the Church at this time because I feel I am not part of the Church anymore.

  • Could you please let me know if I would ever be allowed to be a full part of the Church again or should I move on?

Thank you for your time,

Paul

Mary Ann replied:

Hi, Paul —

All you need to do is go to your Catholic pastor and ask to have your marriage convalidated.
It can be a private ceremony.

It's a simple matter, unless she was married before, and you can resume full participation in the sacraments.

Happy Easter!

Hi, Paul —

You will also need to go to sacramental Confession before returning to the sacraments, expressing your repentance for having entered into an invalid marriage.

Participating in the basic sacraments on a regular basis is foundation and key to feeling part of the Church.

I recommend at least monthly Confession along with the obligatory Sunday Mass.

Talk to your pastor about the various ministries he has to offer within the parish, meet new Catholic friends, and get involved!!

Finally, remember what the world calls burdensome commandments with have to do are, in reality great blessings for our own benefit. Receiving the Sunday Eucharist in a state of grace ensures that we see the world more clearly from a Christianity aspect. This also enables us to make good Christian choices for that week.

This is what I told me God child, Stevie, who chose me as his Confirmation sponsor.
