Hi, guys —
I am currently married and am seeking a divorce.
My soon-to-be ex-husband is gay.
We were
married in a Methodist church and have two kids that are raised in the Catholic faith.
- Will I still be able to receive the sacraments?

Whitney —
Yes, you may, unless you marry again
without having the first marriage
found null. It appears that it may
have been invalid on at least two
grounds:
- his deception about his homosexuality,
and
- the fact that you may have married
outside the Church, as they say, not according to Catholic form,
or without with a dispensation from
the bishop, by getting married
in the Methodist church.
A valid Catholic marriage has to
have an official Catholic witness,
and the Catholic has to have a dispensation:
- to marry a non-Catholic, and
- to marry
in a non-Catholic Church.
God bless you at this difficult time.

Hi, Whitney —
Thank you for your question.
You will be able to continue receiving
the sacraments, however, if you meet
someone and wish to remarry, you
will need to get an annulment.
In your case, the fact that he is
a homosexual would be considered
an impediment to the marriage hence,
an annulment should be fairly easy
to get, however, none of us are canon
lawyers.
You would actually have
to go through the marriage tribunal process
to find out.
