Hi, Erin —
Thanks for the question.
Wearing a veil at Mass is a praiseworthy
expression of reverence, and the
custom is quite well alive among
tradition-minded Catholics.
For guidance about modesty in dress,
in social life, I recommend what
St. Francis de Sales, bishop of Geneva
who lived from 1567-1622, wrote in his Introduction
to the Devout Life. The
book is a classic with wise and balanced
advice for lay Catholics. He recommended
simplicity, cleanliness, and quality
in dress.
Chapter 25: On Modesty in Dress.
He writes that modesty in dress depends
on:
- a lady's age
- her marital status,
and
- on the society in which she moves.
Because of that last point, it's
probably not a good idea to wear
a veil or hijab in places where it's
not customary.
God bless!
