Erin Peck wrote:

Hi, guys —

I have a question about modesty. I recently became a devout Catholic, meaning I have always been Catholic, but recently my faith has become a huge part of my life.

  • As far as head coverings and modesty goes, should Catholic women always cover their head?

I see Muslim women do it for their faith, and I feel drawn to that to show them my dedication to my Lord. I am going to start wearing a veil at Mass, because when I pray with it, I feel so pious and respectful.

  • Can Catholic women wear a veil or hijab when they go out?
  • Is it something we should do?
  • And does it matter?

Thank you!

Erin

One of our colleagues, Andrew replied:

Hi, Erin —

Thanks for the question.

Wearing a veil at Mass is a praiseworthy expression of reverence, and the custom is quite well alive among tradition-minded Catholics.

For guidance about modesty in dress, in social life, I recommend what St. Francis de Sales, bishop of Geneva who lived from 1567-1622, wrote in his Introduction to the Devout Life. The book is a classic with wise and balanced advice for lay Catholics. He recommended simplicity, cleanliness, and quality in dress.

Chapter 25: On Modesty in Dress.

He writes that modesty in dress depends on:

  • a lady's age
  • her marital status, and
  • on the society in which she moves.

Because of that last point, it's probably not a good idea to wear a veil or hijab in places where it's not customary.

God bless!

— Andrew
