John Smith wrote:

Hi, guys —

My girlfriend and I are beginning to talk about marriage. I have had some illnesses which can cause infertility. My ability to have children would be an important factor in our decision on whether to get married.

I have done some research and it appears that male fertility testing involves masturbation.
My research also has found that masturbation is a sin in all cases — even for medical testing so my question is:

  • Is there a non-sinful way that I can be tested for fertility?

Thank you,

John S.

Mary Ann replied:

Hi, John —

Yes, there is.

Go to NaProtechnology for a list of fertility specialists who use moral means, or call your diocese to find local Creighton-trained physicians.
