Hi, Sheila —
Thanks for the question.
Although there is nothing wrong with
an on-going novena, it is not necessary
to repeat it for an on-going problem.
The novena has its origins in the
nine days that the Apostles and Our
Blessed Mother prayed from the Ascension
of Our Lord into Heaven to the descent
of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday.
Whatever results, or does not result,
from our prayerful novena, we have
to trust that the saint who is In
Christ Jesus and the Lord,
will answer our prayer according
to what is best for us and those
involved in our petition(s).
At my parish, we just finished a novena
to St. Monica that lapsed Catholics will come back to:
- attending Sunday
Mass on a weekly basis and
- receiving
the sacrament of Confession at least
on a monthly basis, as the bishops
recommend.
I recommend other bishops start similar
novenas in their dioceses.
Hope this helps,
Mike
