Hi, Linda —
Besides the fasting one hour before
Communion rule, the only reason Catholics,
after the age of reason, could not receive Communion is if they are
in mortal sin and have yet to be
reconciled with God and His Church
through the sacrament of Confession.
Being separated for a just reason
is not mortal sin, but we Catholics
recognize the marital bond still
remains during separation, so a (romantic/physical)
relationship or liaison would be
sin and would keep one from Communion.
If you are seeking an annulment,
one must always presume the marriage
is valid and behave according to
that presumption (until or unless)
an annulment is officially declared.
If you are separated because of reasons
of abuse but hope one day to reconcile
with your spouse, that is also a
holy option.
