Hi, guys —

  • Is there a blessing that the Church can perform for an elderly couple who do not want to legally get married but wish to be together and still be in good standing with the Church?

This is a question that my uncle wants answered. He is 84 and she is 82.

Thank you.

Hi, Patti —

If by wish to be together, you are talking about platonic relationship where there is no cohabitation or dating involved, but you are just a good friends, the Church really doesn't have an official blessing other then the one both of you receive through the sacraments of the Church.

In my opinion, age is not a factor in your question. Look at Abraham: he was 99 when he had a son, Isaac, with Sarah, who was 90 : ) (Read Genesis, Chapters 17 to 21, especially Genesis 17:15-21 and Genesis 21:1-7)

The faithful are called to serve the Church either as a single person or married couple. There are blessings or prayers for both these vocations.

Nevertheless, I'm glad your uncle has a good friend he can rely on for friendship.

Being single myself and being in a similar situation as your uncle, one can get lonely and it's nice to have a female friend to talk to. I've also heard that females tend to think it a different way than males. This isn't saying either way is good or (not good); it's just the physiological way we were created.

Hope this helps,

Mike
