Dear R.G.,
The Church does recognize the validity
of marriage outside the Church
— for those who are
non-Catholic. Since both of you are
baptized Catholics, your situation
is very different.
The priest is right, civil marriages
of Catholics outside of the Church
are not valid.
Coming up to receive Holy Communion,
while living in such a union, is
objectively a sacrilege. That being said, since you seem sincerely ignorant
of this, there may not be any guilt
for you up to this point.
Please make an appointment with your
pastor to talk to him about your
situation; and don't receive Holy
Communion until or unless your situation
is rectified.
Paul
