It is not wrong, and can be a good thing, to read the writings of leaders of other faiths and religions, unless they begin to endanger your faith. You have to be strong enough in the understanding of your own faith to be able to put other beliefs in context, taking the nuggets of truth while leaving the rest.
The Dalai Lama recently admitted that he was a Marxist, so it is hard to see how his beliefs would be useful.
