• Are you talking about a dedication in the context of a real Baptism with water and everything?
• Or are you talking about something that resembles a Baptism but contains a dedication in lieu of water?
  

Some churches don't believe in infant baptism so they will dedicate their babies to the Lord in a ceremony that resembles a Baptism. They are basically praying that their children will eventually come to accept the Lord and follow Him, but they don't undergo the sacrament of water Baptism.

I've never heard of a dedication in the context of a water Baptism, especially in a Catholic Baptism.

If it happened, it's probably the same sort of prayer, only celebrated with water Baptism.
