Hi, guys —

  • Can salt offer protection from evil spirits?

Someone told me that if you put salt:

  • around your house
  • in the corners of your room, or
  • across the entrance to your doorways

that it will protect your home from evil spirits.

  • Is this true?

Salty

Mary Ann replied:

Dear Salty,

Blessed salt, salt blessed by a priest with the prayer of the Church, is a sacramental like
holy water. Because it bears the prayer of the Holy Spirit in the Church, it is put around
spaces as a sign of the prayer for protection.

Since it has been blessed, i.e., made holy, set aside for God, it is a barrier to evil spirits. These sacramentals are powerful extensions of the grace of the Body of Christ spread out in time and space. They are not magical, and must be used with devotion and faith.

Mary Ann

Thank you!
