Hi, guys —
My boyfriend and I are talking about marriage. We are both Catholic. He was married in the Catholic Church before, but is now divorced because she walked out on him.
He wants to get an annulment so that we can get married in the Catholic Church. I am very proud of my faith, having gone to Catholic school for 12 years, and would love to get married in the same church my mother and father had, however, my boyfriend's ex-wife keeps saying that she will not let him get an annulment and that she will do everything she can to prevent it, even though she was the one who filed for divorce five years ago.
- Can she have any effect on the annulment and its outcome if she is trying to prevent it out of spite for my boyfriend?
- If she does, how can we prove that we are committed to the Catholic Church and want God to be part of our marriage?
Thank you,

Dear Anonymous,
In the end, it is the truth of the situation that will be the result, however, the former spouse has every right to object and can certainly slow it all down no matter what the outcome.
If you are certain that this will be contentious situation, I recommend you get a good canon lawyer to be your advocate right from the beginning.
