Max —
The Commandments condemn worship of false gods. The first commandment also forbids the making of a graven image of a god, an idol.
Then God came to earth, and took on a human nature. An image of Him is not an idol, an image of a false god. It is an image of the True God.
Before Christ, no one could see God. When Christ came, people could see God in the flesh.
An image of Him in the flesh is not an idol. To be sure, we do not adore the images of Christ
(on crucifixes and in paintings) the way people adore idols of false gods.
We adore only God, but we honor the images of Him, because not to honor images of Him would be disrespectful.
