Wondering Wendy wrote:

Hi, guys —

I have a difficult question to ask. I was raised Catholic and I married my first husband in the Catholic Church.

Years ago, we divorced and I remarried. He and I have reconnected and are discussing getting back together. Our marriage was never annulled by the Church. (My second marriage was a
non-denominational wedding.)

  • Would we be able to re-join the Catholic Church since in the eyes of the Church we are still married, although not legally?

Eric replied:

Hi, Wendy —

  • Have you divorced your second husband?
  • Is your first husband presently not in a civil marriage?

If so, go to your local parish for Confession, confess the second marriage to him and explain your situation. He should be able to provide advice.

As far as I know, you should be free to reconcile but it's best to cover all your bases and talk it over with a priest to be certain.

Eric

Fr. Jonathan replied:

Hi, Wendy —

Based on what you said you are still canonically married to each other. You should go and get civilly married by a legal official and then perhaps renew their vows with a priest just to do something symbolic.

The priest cannot do the civil marriage.

Fr. Jonathan

Wendy replied:

Thank you so very much for your help.
