Hi, Tom —
No. Catholics have always worshiped the Son, never the sun, although the Messiah is called the Sun of Righteousness in Malachi 4:2, and we worship Him.
Some anti-Catholics try to argue that Catholics do or have worshiped the sun, but the evidence falls apart when closely examined.
Often it's no higher quality than saying:
- our communion hosts are round and so is the sun, therefore we must worship the sun, or
- our monstrances have rays of light emanating from them, therefore we must worship the sun. (Ever read about the Transfiguration, or Jesus in Revelation?)
One guy wrote a whole book on how Catholicism was allegedly based on paganism, then saw the error of his ways and wrote another book refuting his first.
