Hi, guys —

I got married when I was 18; he was 32 and had been married before. Less than 3 months into the marriage he was arrested and sent to prison. I didn't even know he was wanted and running from the police. I went through the process and was divorced from him.

I have since remarried and now feel like I am being called to the Catholic Church.

  • My question is can I join the Church?

My current husband was also married once before.

  • Does this make it impossible for me to join the Church?

Holly

  { Because of our marital histories and his criminal record can I follow this call to join the Church? }

Fr. Jonathan sent in the following reply:

Hi Mike,

There are multiple questions that would need to be asked to help this woman. The bottom line is that there is a path to become a Catholic for her but its length will vary depending on her answers to the questions. I suggest she meet with the priest in her area and begin the conversation.

For the record, among the question she would need to answer:

  • Is she baptized?
  • What was the faith of her former spouse?
  • What was the marital situation of former husband and was he married previous to her?
  • What is the faith of her current spouse?
  • What is the faith of his former spouse?

You see how it is impossible to answer her accurately in this forum as there are so many variables.

Overall, have patience. Coming into the Church is only a part of your journey to God and Heaven.

Although I cannot predict how long this part of the journey will last, your journey to answer God's invitation has already begun and that it what is most important.

Mike replied:

Hi Holly,

Seeing you may be preparing to take RCIA classes in the near future, I would encourage you to consider buying a cheap copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church to learn everything we believe as faithful Catholics.

Under each boxed format for the Catechism you want, you will see, below the box, an option to buy a used version, which many times, is not really used but close to new.

Holly replied:

Thank you very much.

I will contact my local priest and get the process started. I just feel like I'm being pulled to the Church and I need to be a part of the Church, so I will do what needs to be done.

Thank you again for your help.

Holly
