Hi, guys —

I listen to a sub genre of metal music called Screamo.

A lot of screamo contains cuss words and songs about death though some of it actually speaks a message that you should be yourself and let your voice be heard.

  • Would it be a sin to listen to this kind of music?

Mike replied:

Dear Eli,

Thanks for the question.

As my former colleague Mary Ann said in answering a previous question:

It's not a question of right or wrong, but of whether something is good or bad for you, whether it damages or desensitizes you, whether it presents an occasion of sin.

Seeing that this music is obviously not of the same genre of music as Gregory chant, and obviously tends to desensitize Christian values, I would stay clear from it.

If you are looking for permission or a rationalization to listen to this music, you won't find it, at least from me.

This posting may put things in perspective:

I hope this helps,

Mike
