Michael wrote:

Hi, guys —

I was married for thirteen years, had two sons, when to Catholic Mass and all.

I was divorced and, two years afterward, she received an annulment from the Catholic tribunal of the Archdiocese in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her reasons were:

  • she used marriage to get away from her dad, and
  • being young.

I am 59 years old now and wanted to remarry. The woman is a widow, whose husband passed away some ten years ago.

  • Even if we can't marry in the Church are we still living in sin the rest of our days?

Thank you in advance,

Michael

  { Only my ex-wife received an annulment but why can't I remarry a woman whose husband has died? }

Fr. Jonathan replied:

Michael —

This doesn't make sense. From what you wrote you are free to marry.

She obtained an annulment for your marriage and that counts for both of you.

You want to marry a woman whose husband has died, therefore she is free to marry.

Go get married!

Fr. Jonathan
