Rachel wrote:

Hi, guys —

I am in the marching band at my high school. Some of the music we play consists of arrangements of real songs. Some of these songs have sinful lyrics but we just play the music.

  • Am I sinning by just playing this music even if the songs contain sinful lyrics?

Thank you so much for your time.

Rachel

John replied:

Hi, Rachel —

Generally, I would say that music without lyrics is neutral.

We first have to determine if the lyrics or listening to them is actually sinful. We need to be careful not to go overboard in calling everything sinful.

Now as it relates to your situation, if the lyrics are truly sinful, people listening to the music might be reminded of the lyrics so you might not want participate in that but I wouldn't go so far as calling it sinful to play.

We want to be good witnesses but in doing so we don't want to appear so extreme that we chase people away from the faith.

Hope this helps,

John
