Teetee Kay wrote:

Hi, guys —

I am a Catholic and my boyfriend is a Hindu. We intend to get married. I read that we can get married in a Catholic Church if a dispensation for a disparity of cult is granted.

We both are from India.

  • I would like to know if there are cases in which interreligious marriages have been allowed in churches?
  • Also, if the bishop for my diocese refuses to grant permission, can I secure it from some other bishop who might be willing?

Teetee

  { Are interreligious marriages allowed and, if the bishop refuses, can I go to another bishop? }

Fr. Jonathan replied:

Dear Teetee,

If you are free to marry and you make the two promises:

  1. Essentially, to remain a Catholic, and
  2. To do all in your power to baptize and raise the children as Catholics.

With this in mind, the bishop of your diocese cannot refuse you as it is your right to be married.

Your future spouse must witness your promises but he doesn't make any promises.

  • But why the pessimism?

Be positive and make an appointment with a priest.

Fr. Jonathan
