It requires that the candidate be properly catechized, which typically means that they'll have attended Catholic school or CCD (Sunday School) classes each year. If not, they'll have to go through a course of formation, perhaps:
- the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIC)
- the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) or
- something equivalent.
They'll probably want the candidate to be confirmed in the spring with the other candidates, or at a minimum, at Easter. Some of this depends on the pastor. The process itself involves an anointing with oil and a laying on of hands, usually by a bishop,
