Hi, guys —

  • If a tenet is paying their rent but the landlord is not reporting his taxes from the rent [and/or] the landlord lies to the utility companies to receive lower bills, is the tenet considered cooperating with evil?
  • If the tenet paying rent objected to these sins and had no cooperation in these acts but just happens to live there, would they still be sinning?

  { In these scenarios, dealing with rent, is the tenet culpable for the sinful acts of their landlord? }

Hi Joanna,

Thanks for the question.

I see no personal sin on the part of the person paying the rent. If the rent payer were actively involved in the Landlord's sin it would be another thing but, because he is objecting, there is no sin involved.

If there are nuances to your situation, touch base with your local priest and take his advice.

Mike
