Hi Rita,
Based on what I have learned from Fr. Jonathan, our priest-helper, I would say not much. The best thing you can do on your end is ensure:
- all the paperwork the Tribunal needs is signed
- all the people that need to be contacted are contacted, and
- that the tribunal is made aware of any problems you run into immediately so you can get further guidance.
If Fr. Jonathan has anything more to say, I am sure he will chime in.
I really have no idea how long the annulment process takes. My personal opinion is you cannot put a time period on it because of the many circumstances involved with various people of various faiths and marital backgrounds.
As a lay Catholic who has read many questions from this site dealing with annulments, my biggest concern is that the petitioner can incorrectly assume that an annulment will be granted. We have to pray and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance.
This is just my opinion as a lay Catholic. I will defer my opinion to Father's.
Mike
