Mike wrote:

Hi, guys —

Catholics pray for intercessions of the saints.

  • Why don't Catholics pray for the intercessions of the angels?

The seven archangels are obviously powerful entities and close to God.

  • Why can't they intercede for us?

Mike

  { If Catholics pray for intercessions of the saints, why don't they pray for the intercession of angels? }

Eric replied:

Dear Mike,

We do, and they can.

There is a well-known prayer to St. Michael to Archangel, for example. It goes like this:

St. Michael

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

There are also prayers to St. Raphael, who is the patron saint of marriage and healing and St. Gabriel who is the patron saint of messengers, telecommunication workers, and postal workers.

Together the three archangels have a feast day, September 29th. I think you will find this article interesting as well.

Eric

Mike replied:

Dear Mike,

I just wanted to add the prayers to St. Raphael and St. Gabriel. I'm sure there are many types of prayers for each one, but here are two:

St. Raphael

Glorious Archangel St. Raphael, great prince of the heavenly court, you are illustrious for your gifts of wisdom and grace. You are a guide of those who journey by land or sea or air, consoler of the afflicted, and refuge of sinners. I beg you, assist me in all my needs and in all the sufferings of this life, as once you helped the young Tobias on his travels. Because you are the medicine of God I humbly pray you to heal the many infirmities of my soul and the ills that afflict my body. I especially ask of you the favor (here mention your special intention), and the great grace of purity to prepare me to be the temple of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

St. Gabriel

O blessed Archangel Gabriel, we beseech thee, intercede for us at the throne of Divine Mercy in our present necessities, that as you announced to Mary the mystery of the Incarnation, so through thy prayers and patronage in heaven we may obtain the benefits of the same, and sing the praise of God forever in the land of the living. Amen.

Hope this helps,

Mike
