Dear friend,
I could not find any explanation either, but since she was so popular in the early and medieval Church it is not difficult to imagine any group wanting to appropriate her patronage.
My long shot guess is that since her dowry was to be distributed among the poor, someone had to go «door–to–door» to locate and aid those who truly needed assistance, hence salesmen saw in this a kinship
Keep digging, you may find an answer.
Peace,
Bob Kirby
