Hi, guys —

I am a Protestant seeker of the truth of Christ and his Church and have been digging deep into the teachings of Catholicism.

I understand the duty and reasons for the veneration of the Virgin Mary and pray to her for intercession on our behalf. However, I am confused by the various forms of address used in prayer to Our Lady (Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Guadalupe, etc.)

  • How does one know how to address the Blessed Virgin in prayer?
  • Is there a certain grace imparted if one uses a specific form of address based on the various apparitions?

Mike replied:

Dear Troy,

Sorry, it took a while to get back to you.

You may address Our Blessed Mother any way you wish, as long as it is with due respect.

Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and other titles are just various apparitions (with any corresponding messages) that have been approved by the Church as non-harmful to the faithful.

Some of them, like Our Lady of Fatima, do impart special graces for carrying out what Our Blessed Mother asked for. In Our Lady of Fatima's case, praying the Rosary, but even when you pray the Rosary, you may use an address that properly addresses the Mother of Jesus, like:

  • Our Blessed Mother
  • The Blessed Virgin Mary
  • The Virgin Mary
  • Mother of God
  • etc.

Keep on digging and keep on seeking and if you have any other questions, just ask us and remember to check our popular questions areas:

I hope this helps,

Mike
