Hi, guys —

I recently asked my priest to invest me in the Brown Scapular, but he just blessed it and didn't say any "investing" prayers.

  • Am I invested in the Brown Scapular or should I have him say the investing prayers?

Pax,

Mike Frost

  { If a priest blesses my Brown Scapular, is that enough to be invested in the Scapular or should he have said the investing prayers? }

Mike replied:

Dear Mike,

You are not invested in the Brown Scapular. It would have been better if your priest told you that he didn't have the proper investing ceremony literature/pamphlet to invest you but that he could at least bless your Brown Scapular, making it a sacramental.

You receive grace for wearing a blessed Brown Scapular because you are wearing it in faith, but you are not invested.

Being invested allows you to share in the good works of others in the Carmelite Order as well as any promises Our Blessed Mother made for wearing the Scapular.

I remember when I was invested with Brian, a friend of mine; we were both kneeling before the priest as he said the investiture prayer over us.

Here is a link to the investiture prayer (below). Print both sides out and bring it back to him.

If he is not willing to do it, find another faithful priest who will invest you in the Scapular or go to a nearby Carmelite monastery and get enrolled.

I hope this helps,

Mike
