Teresa Campbell wrote:

Hi, guys —

My husband received absolution on his sick bed without confessing or repenting of his sins.

  • Is it still freed in Heaven?
  • Is he in Heaven, or not?

Teresa

  { Will my husband go to Heaven if he received absolution without confessing/repenting of his sins? }

Eric replied:

Teresa,

I envision two possible scenarios.

One is that he received the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick alone because he was not lucid enough to confess his sins and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. If he had repented of those sins prior, he would be absolved of them, even without Confession.

If the priest somehow gave him the Sacrament of Reconciliation without hearing his Confession and without his repentance even though he was lucid enough to do so, that would be invalid and ineffectual.

In any case, any sins not repented of (and you may or may not be able to divine true repentance in the heart), would not be forgiven.

If they were grave sins, he would not make it to Heaven, but again, we can't read his heart or judge him, so don't give up on praying for him.

Eric

Mike replied:

Dear Teresa,

Though not directly addressing your question, to add to what my colleague Eric said, any sins which are forgiven can be purified in the Holy Hospital we call Purgatory.

If you truly are interested in helping and praying for your husband,  check out my FREE Purgatory Prayer Program at my other website: HelpersOfTheHolySouls.com.

Again, it’s FREE.

Mike
