Hi, guys —

I would love to buy a book for a specific diet protocol called "The Thermo Diet". But then I learned that this author has put some bad words here and there, like some "F" words.

  • Is it a sin if I buy it?
  • Would the Lord Jesus be displeased with me if I get the book?

I just want to learn about the diet to apply it to my lifestyle.

Bob replied:

Dear Ignazio,

I think it is okay to get the book; I think the swear words are a venial sin of the authors doing and they will not be counted against you.  I think Jesus knows you don’t want to offend Him, and that is very pleasing to Him.

Peace,

Bob Kirby

Ignazio,

I agree with my colleague Bob. It's like listening to someone speaking on a meaningful topic who occasionally uses foul language; you don't throw the baby out with the bath water. If you have an issue, you can always black the words out as you encounter them.

If he does this on every page, though, it might desensitize you to foul language or be a distraction, and it might not be worth it. As they say, garbage in, garbage out.

An idea is to see if you can check the book out from your library and examine it before purchasing it. You might consider writing the publisher, though, and encouraging them to remove them.

Eric
