Hi, guys —

My question is in regard to the requirements of the Five First Saturdays devotion.
One of the requirements to fulfill this devotion is to pray the Rosary (how to, history) for reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

  • Is it okay to pray the Rosary in a group (with a leader saying the first half of the prayers and myself saying the second half) or do I have to literally say every word of the Rosary, on my own, to fulfill the requirements?

Mike replied:

Dear John,

Yes, it is OK to pray the Rosary in a group (with a leader saying the first half of the prayers and someone else saying the second half).

This is the way it is prayed at many Catholic parishes during the week.

  • But why?

Because we pray as one baptized group of Christians offering our prayer of reparation. (We are all on the same page) and even if a non-Christian is drawn to pray the Rosary, they too, will receive many blessings and graces, for the same reason.

There is also nothing wrong with praying the Rosary by yourself; I do it all the time.

I encourage all Christians and non-Christians, if they are drawn, to pray the Rosary and complete the First Saturday (and First Friday) devotion(s).

I hope this answers your question.

Mike

John,

Just to add to Mike's answer:

You might find it helpful to use an app or YouTube video to pray along with.  I use the Scriptural Rosary, on PodBean or there are various Scriptural rosaries on YouTube.  Just do a search.

They add a Scripture between each prayer that's related to the Mystery that you're meditating on. That helps to keep you focused on the particular Mystery you are currently praying.

To pray the Rosary well, we meditate on the Mystery, while we're verbally praying the, “Our Father”, “Hail Mary”, and “Glory Be” but that's not always easy, especially at first.  It might be easier, at least at first, to use a Scriptural Rosary video or Scripture app on your phone.

Obviously, this takes a little longer.  Another option is to find a video with good priests or prayer leaders that will offer a meditation before each decade or Mystery.

I hope that helps,

John DiMascio
