Deacon Gary K. wrote:

Hi, guys —

I believe I know the answer to this but I would like confirmation.

  • Is it permissible to have Mass outside the Church environment just for the sake of doing so?

Our parish for the last ten years has had Mass and BBQ in the park once a year for the youth. In my opinion, with a few exceptions, most of our youth do not have a firm grasp on what the Mass is.

My understanding from reading the canons is that Mass should always be in the confines of the Church when one is available.

I have never assisted at one of these Masses and am reluctant to do so.

Thank you

Deacon Gary

One of our colleagues, Andrew replied:

Hi, Deacon Gary:

Here's a canonist's commentary on the topic:

by Cathy Caridi, an American canon lawyer who teaches Canon law in Rome.

Hope this helps,

— Andrew

Deacon Gary replied:

Hi Andrew,

Thank you!

That confirms what I thought.

God bless,

Deacon Gary
