Catholics have priests bless all kinds of things, including schools, homes, cars, and animals. There is even a specific blessing for beer.

It's a way of setting apart (or consecrating, or making holy) items for the use of God. By blessing an object, or a person, we pray that God would set apart that object or person as an instrument of His Glory and Service. And, we also give thanks for it. We acknowledge that all things come from God and that we offer all things back to God.

Blessings also have the intrinsic property of counteracting any negative spiritual influences on the person or object.

A Blessing of Beer From The Rituale Romanum —

Latin:

Benedic, Domine, creaturam istam cerevisiae, quam ex adipe frumenti producere dignatus es: ut sit remedium salutare humano generi, et praesta per invocationem nominis tui sancti; ut, quicumque ex ea biberint, sanitatem corpus et animae tutelam percipiant.

Per Christum Dominum nostrum.

Amen.

English:

Bless, O Lord, this creature beer, which thou hast deigned to produce from the fat of grain: that it may be a salutary remedy to the human race, and grant through the invocation of thy holy name; that, whoever shall drink it, may gain health in body and peace in soul.

Through Christ our Lord.
