Hi, guys —
- Is chicken considered a meat, and
- Are we allowed to eat it on Good Friday
and Fridays during Lent?
I have been told two different things:
- Some tell me that you can eat chicken
on Good Friday, as it is poultry — not
meat.
- Others tell me you can't eat chicken,
because it is a meat.

Dear Dr. Brennan,
Thanks for the question.
Chicken is definitely classified
as meat, however chicken fat, as
found in broth, is not considered
meat.
All fowl, including chicken, are
excluded from consumption by the
laws of abstinence but condiments
made from animals (e.g. broths and
flavorings) are permitted. Eggs
and milk are also permitted.
